TUNE M1 TORQUE SPECS
& Tightening Guide

Tune publishes its torque numbers, but they're scattered across a FAQ, a care page, a jack-mounting install PDF, and a video. I pulled every figure from Tune's own docs and put them on one page, with the sources cited at the bottom so you can check my work.

TL;DR

Main mounting bolts: 8 ft-lbs. Jack-plate bracket bolts (M8x35): 12 ft-lbs. Jam nut, standard mount only: 20 ft-lbs or more. Re-torque at 50, 250, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 miles, then quarterly.

What's the torque spec for the Tune M1?

Three numbers cover almost everything. The main mounting bolts torque to 8 ft-lbs (that's 96 in-lbs), which loads each one to roughly 1,000 lbs of clamping force, enough to hold the camper without deforming your truck bed. The jack-plate bracket bolts torque to 12 ft-lbs (144 in-lbs). And on the standard mount, the jam nut torques to 20 ft-lbs or more.

The 8 ft-lb main-bolt figure is the same whether you're on the standard mount or the Toyota bed-rail mount. One catch Tune calls out repeatedly: the tool depends on your specific hardware. The main bolt takes either a 7/16" or a 3/4" socket, so look at your bolt head before you reach for a socket.

Every number here comes straight from Tune. I haven't added a value they don't publish, and where a spec applies to only one mount type, the notes column says so.

Standard mount vs. rail (Toyota) mount

The M1 ships with two mounting setups, and the fastener list is different between them. The gap that trips people up is the jam nut.

The standard mount uses the full set: M8x35 bracket bolts at 12 ft-lbs, the main bolt at 8 ft-lbs, a jam nut at 20 ft-lbs or more, and landing pads. The jam nut is the piece that locks everything against backing off.

The Toyota bed-rail mount is simpler: six bolts at 8 ft-lbs each, and that's the whole job. No jam nut, no separate bracket step. If you're on a Tacoma or Tundra using the rail mount and you go looking for a jam-nut spec, you won't find one, because there isn't a jam nut to torque.

The re-torque schedule (Tune's own docs conflict)

This is the one place I can't hand you a single clean answer, because Tune doesn't give one. Their materials disagree on the re-torque intervals, and rather than paper over it, here's exactly what each source says.

  • Quick Start Guide (PDF): 50, 250, 500, and 5,000 miles, then quarterly.
  • Official how-to video: 250, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 miles, then quarterly.
  • Care & Usage page: no mileage at all, just "check that bolts remain torqued before driving."

When the manufacturer's own numbers don't line up, I default to the conservative union of both lists. Check the torque at 50, 250, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 miles, then quarterly. Nobody has ever regretted checking a mounting bolt too often. When in doubt, do it sooner.

Pulling the camper off resets the clock. Every time you remove and reinstall the M1, the mileage schedule starts over from zero. Fresh install, fresh 50-mile check.

The tool that actually fits

8 ft-lbs is 96 in-lbs, and that number is a problem for the wrench most people already own. A typical 1/2" drive click-style torque wrench is least accurate at the very bottom of its range, and 96 in-lbs sits at or below that floor. You can set the number, but you can't trust it.

Use a 1/4"-drive inch-pound torque wrench, roughly a 20 to 200 in-lb range. That puts the 96 in-lb main bolts and the 144 in-lb (12 ft-lb) plate bolts near the middle of the scale, where a click wrench is actually accurate. This is the single most useful tool call on this page.
